Layamon is the first prominent
Middle English poet. He has described himself as a humble priest that was attached to the church at Ernley, which is near
Radstone. His name means "law man" or "judge." He desired to chronicle the glorious history of England. Brut is his
only work, but a masterful one at that. Not a lot about him is known, except for what he tells the reader about himself in
the poem.
